Beyond the Textbook: Why the Skill of Adaptability Is Your Ultimate Advantage in the Age of AI

Today, research confirms that the human skill of adaptability is no longer a "nice-to-have". It's your most critical advantage, especially if you are a graduate or early-career worker.

I was excited to learn today that Stanford’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Lab just released a spicy paper, backed by a satisfying amount of data, that uncovered a substantial decline (13% relative decline since 2022) in employment for young workers, specifically in occupations most exposed to AI (so we are talking software developers, customer service, financial managers, accountants, marketing and sales reps). It also uncovered that, in contrast, employment trends for more experienced workers in the same occupations, and workers of all ages in less-exposed occupations, have remained stable or continue to grow.

You might be surprised and you might be asking, but why? Well, the data suggests that this may be the result of the importance of tacit knowledge to employers.

So what does this mean?

This means, that in this AI era, employers are seeking individuals with hands on experience, not just a beautiful brain full of knowledge. Employers want employees with the instinct, intuition and reflexes that are gained through agency, as AI may be less capable of replacing "the idiosyncratic tips and tricks that accumulate with experience.”

And this is where the human skill of adaptability becomes your most critical advantage. If you're a young professional, the knowledge you’ve acquired through the standard education system is only one half of the equation. We now must go beyond simply learning. As adults in this new era, we need to unlearn, relearn, and adapt to thrive in a world that is moving faster than we are.

The tacit knowledge that employers are looking for is what you gain through experience, through getting your hands dirty in the real-world environment, in the work. Adaptability is what allows you to take your textbook knowledge, experiment with new AI tools, and create something unique that can't be found in a manual or via ChatGPT. It's your ability to pivot, to adjust, and to use your human instinct to navigate the unknown.

This is one of the ultimate human skills that AI can't replicate. It's the instinct and intuition you gain through agency.

So let’s keep taking action, let’s keep doing, let’s keep evolving.
